Shirley Bounds

Hall of Fame
Induction Year: 2019
Honorary Alumna Class of 2018

Shirley W. Bounds' career at St. Elizabeth High School dates back to 1973 when she came to St. E as a teacher of French and Spanish, as well as a volleyball and basketball coach. She became Department Chairperson for Foreign Languages in 1974 and served in that position until 1994. Shirley was named Assistant Principal of St.
Elizabeth High School in 1978 and after sixteen years in that position she was appointed Associate Principal in September of 1994. Shirley was named principal in 2004, recently retiring in 2018. She was a pioneer for many initiatives at St. E, including leading the way for St. E to become an Apple Distinguished School in 2015. Shirley’s legacy embodied the student experience; taking risks to develop programs that help students realize their potential and pursue their passions. Whether it's been about expanding the Virtual High School program course offerings, developing the arts program, or taking students overseas, the student experience remained at the forefront. Following in her mentor’s footsteps is not easy, but Shirley met that challenge and created a legacy of her own while maintaining the Benedictine charisms, which have
defined the St. Elizabeth Community since 1908. Future generations will continue to build on her vision and the stability she has helped to create through her work ethic, patience and dedication. A few of her signature accomplishments are the creation of the Benedictine Performing Arts Center, the VIFI Program, the MILL, and the institution of a Curriculum Mapping Program. Her commitment to technology and innovative learning has made St. E a 21st Century school recognized nationally and locally as a leader in education. Her devotion to St. E cannot be matched, and she was esteemed as an honorary alumna in 2018, as she truly embodies the maroon and gold spirit of a Viking.
